My estranged father seems to be doing his best to make me feel as small as possible. It always has to be me that puts in the effort - I have to call him, even though he lives in fucking Cyprus, and there has yet to be an apology for walking out on my mum and a 6 week old me. My biggest worry is that he’s going to do the same to my 4 year old half-sister, Jasmin. Anyways, I tried sending him an email today, and it bounced back. I felt I had to get it off my chest, so here it is.
Hi Dad,
I’ve been stuck in Glasgow the past few months due to college and working so I haven’t been home to call (mobile is too expensive).
I’ll be here over the summer too in order to keep my job, so I won’t be able to call then either, but you have my email and my number and my address.
I just thought I’d drop you an email to let you know what’s been going on in my life seeing as I haven’t heard from you.
I have one more week of college, then it’s the summer break, and it could not come any sooner because I am fed up of health and safety, research methodology and Graded Units. I’m staying at my cousin Laura’s flat over summer as you have to pay an extra £400 to stay in halls over summer which is rubbish anyways and is more like a prison with ensuite cubicles. I’m bar tending at a bar called Bar Budda, which is on Sauchiehall Street, the main clubbing street in Glasgow.
Grandad is really sick, he’s on his way out and we’re all struggling to come to terms with it. The stress is causing Granny to become ill too, so we’ve all been doing our best to pop in and stay in the house so she can go out and do things while Grandad still has someone there, despite being bedbound.
I got my tattoo in September, a blue rose on my ribs, and I still need to figure out a way of telling mum without her going nuts before we all go to Cornwall in July. That is going to be a very awkward conversation, you know what she’s like with that kind of thing.
What’s new with you guys?
It would be nice to hear from you, I’m pretty lonely at the moment as all my flatmates have moved home for summer, as has everyone at uni, and everyone on my college course lives ages away.
